Safety tips for construction workers

Working in the construction industry can be dangerous. The nature of the work carries risks, and accidents can result in serious injuries or even death.


OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) law requires employers to provide a work place that is safe and free from hazards. Yet, everyday construction workers face dangers that threaten their health and lives. According to OSHA, each year


- A 1000 workers die in construction related accidents


- A quarter of a million workers suffer injuries resulting in lost work days


- Construction accidents cost the industry $13 billion in workers compensation cost alone


OSHA statistics also show that 90% of the fatalities occur in four categories

These accidents are, therefore, preventable and can be avoided with the proper safety training, precaution, and common sense.


Construction work can indeed be dangerous. The line between a near miss and a fatality is thin. The latest forms of stuttering treatments

If you suffer from the speech impediment known as stuttering, you are not alone. Latest figures suggest that around one percent of the population of England has a stutter or stammer and that the majority of these people are male. In this article I write about the latest stuttering treatments that are available.


I am somebody who had a stutter which originated when I was four years of age. It was to continue to ruin my life for the next eighteen years and had a damaging affect on my self-confidence and self-esteem. I had major problems saying certain words beginning with certain letters and was constantly trying to avoid these type of words.


This is not always easy to do however and I will never forget one particular English lesson when I was around fourteen years of age. I was involved in a class quiz in which we all had to answer simple general knowledge questions. It was a quick fire quiz and as the teacher went around asking each pupil a question in turn, I became more and more nervous. Finally it was my go and I was asked to answer which city was the capital of France. I knew the answer but the demons in my head advised me not to give the answer, as they reminded me that I was unable to say words beginning with p. I was not sure what to do as I could not exactly substitute the word Paris to Lyon. I would do anything to avoid stuttering and stated that I did not know the answer. This was not good as everyone then believed that not only did I have a speech impediment, but that I was also rather stupid.


Ten years ago at the age of twenty-two, I am happy to report that I managed to overcome my own stutter. This was after a year long program of self-help stuttering therapy. This included long periods of observing how good fluent people were talking compared to me and also be reading many self-help type books. These books included areas such as mind over matter, success and positive thinking and were a huge help in improving my whole life.


There are many types of stuttering treatments now available, certainly a lot more than when I had a stutter. There is the normal and traditional speech therapy route. This is where most people start and this type of treatment is of use, however most speech therapists do not believe that you can overcome a stutter, this for me says it all. My answer to them is, have you ever heard of Bruce Willis? I attended speech therapy, however I must admit I did not go to the sessions with the right attitude. I did not believe that they could help me and that their methods of advising me to speak slower and to breathe deeply were floored, as this was not how my friends were talking. I also did not think that they could ever fully understand what I was going through as they have never had a stuttering problem themselves.


The latest stuttering treatments include one-to-one speech courses, group speech courses, self-help ebooks and also self-help dvds. In my opinion the one-to-one speech courses are currently the best option to take and will give you the best chance of attaining fluency. I do understand though that the self-help options can be very appealing to a lot of people, firstly because of the affordability factor and also because of the obvious fact that a lot of people who stutter do not have the confidence to attend a speech course.


More and more people are seeking help to eradicate their stutter and no longer accept second best in their lives.

Windshield crack repair

It’s happened to all of us, driving along the highway minding our own business, when a chip of stone kicked up by the car in front pings against the window and chips it. It’s one of the most frustrating things that can happen to your car, and considering the size of the damage, it is disproportionately expensive to put right. Many people take their car to the repair shop with a stone chip in the windshield, and then get charged for a replacement at a cost of hundreds of dollars.


However, this need not be the case. Under many circumstances, instead of replacing the whole windshield, you can use a windshield repair kit to fix small cracks and chips in the glass at a fraction of the cost.


A typical car windshield is made up of a laminate of at least two layers of glass with a polymer resin sandwiched between them This gives the glass huge strength, and in the event of an accident, the resin is designed to hold the pieces of glass together and stop them showering into the car and causing injury.


Because of the layered structure of a windshield, crack repair is possible. Usually in the event of a stone chip, only one layer of glass is damaged, with the underlying layers remaining undamaged. This means that it is possible to make the windshield more stable, and prevent the damage getting any worse, without having to replace the whole windshield.


If the stone chip has gone through more than one layer of the glass, or is positioned right in the centre of the driver’s field of vision, then you should consider replacing the wind shield completely, because under such circumstances, the damage could cause impairment to the ability of the driver.


If you are able to repair the windshield, you should carry out the work as soon as possible after the damage occurs. If it is left too long, the cracks can spread out across the screen thanks to the pressure of the air pushing against the glass when you are driving. As the cracks spread, the glass becomes weaker and weaker, and can eventually simply shatter under the pressure, which is obviously highly dangerous for the driver and any passengers in the car.


The actual method of repairing a stone chip or small crack in the glass is simple with the appropriate windshield repair kits. Although different manufacturers package the kit differently, the actual method used is roughly the same.


Windshield crack repair is carried out by injecting a clear resin into the crack or chip under pressure in order to completely fill any spaces, then the resin is cured rapidly using a special light that leaves it as hard as rock. If it is carried out properly there should be no distortion of vision when you repair windshield crack damage, and in many cases, the resin bonds so well with the edges of the cracks that the actual damage is much less visible and distracting for the driver.


As well as small windshield repair kits designed for a single use, larger professional kits are also available that contain enough resin and equipment to perform up to 100 repairs. Because it is a fairly straightforward task to repair cracked windshields using the proper tools, there are many companies available who will carry out the service on your behalf, although at a much higher cost than doing the work yourself – albeit a lot less than you would have to pay for an entirely new windshield.


The windshield on your car is there to protect you at all times, but it must be clear to see out of to help you avoid any trouble in the first place. It is vitally important to repair any damage to it, no matter how small it is, to ensure your safety, and also to prevent it getting worse and potentially costing you a lot of money.

What would happen if…? I'm a person to always ask that question. I love testing and tracking to see what factors can improve or worsen a situation. So, it was only natural for me to track the moves of a little experiment I did involving SEO copywriting recently. I'll gladly share my findings with you.

Before I do, however, I want to make a couple of things very clear. The outcome of this experiment will not be the same for every keyphrase on every page of every site. There are too many unknown factors at play in the overall SEO equation. Not to mention, all keyphrases are not the same, and all sites are not the same. In addition, this experiment takes no account of link popularity, which is a huge factor in achieving high rankings. With that said, let me show you how I took the home page of one of my sites - that didn't even rank in the top 50 - and caused it to rank in the top 10.

First of all, I'm not a big fan of checking rankings on a regular basis. I don't run ranking reports for all my sites to be sure they are all in the positions I want them in for every given keyphrase. I'll do it from time to time just to satisfy my own occasional curiosity. This experiment began when I noticed the home page of one of my sites was ranking highly for a keyphrase that didn't seem to appear anywhere in the text. Upon further investigation, I saw that the keyphrase was included in the ALT tags (a. k.a. image attribute tags) and that it was also included in the title tag.

I knew ALT tags previously carried a lot of weight with the engines, but had been downgraded in importance because site owners had badly abused the tag. Had ALT tags been reinstated in their level of importance? I decided to find out.

Keyword #1 was currently in the ALT tags and the title tag, so I decided to eliminate the keyword in the title tag. This would let me see if the ALT tags alone could hold the position in the search engine results pages (SERPs). To make things more interesting, I also decided to research and find a keyword that was a little more competitive and insert it into the title tag. On the same day I removed Keyword #1 from the title tag, I inserted Keyword #2. My home page was not ranked in the top 50 at that time for Keyword #2.

A few days later, the Googlebot came by and boosted my home page to position #18 for Keyword #2. Not bad! The page fell one spot (from #17 to #18) for Keyword #1 since the removal of the phrase from the title tag.

Keep in mind, these are not the most competitive keywords ever known. They each got between 100 to 200 searches a day. Also, the home page of this particular site had been (and still is) well ranked for years for other keyphrases and had a positive legacy with Google.

Five days later, Keyword #2 was moved up three notches to a ranking of #14 while Keyword #1 stayed the same. Things remained in their status quo for roughly 10 days and then began to shift again. Keyword #1, the original that was previously in both the ALT tags and the title tag, vanished completely. It was not found in the top 50. Keyword #2, that was only found in the title tag and nowhere else, dropped to position #25.

Four days later, Keyword #2 was back up in the rankings and was now at #16. To see if I could improve rankings further, I began to make small tweaks to the page attributes. I added Keyword #2 to the ALT tags (taking the places where Keyword #1 had once been), and I also added Keyword #2 to the body copy. The keyphrase was added to one, bold sub-headline and at three places within the body copy: none of which were above the fold. It was not added to any primary headlines that used tags, and no keyword density formula was followed for the body copy. No other pages on my site used this term as anchor text in links pointing to the home page. That gave the page keyword placement in the:

· Title tag

· ALT tags

· Body copy

Seven days later, the home page hit the top 10 for Keyword #2!

So, what does all this mean? Simple. There is no single primary factor in search engine rankings. It takes balance, testing and tracking to find out what works for your particular pages. Your best bet is to do exactly what I did… begin one step at a time and track your progress. Did something cause a positive movement? Keep it. If something causes a negative shift, take it out.

I'm not finished with this page yet. I'll keep trying different things from time to time just to see what happens. Maybe I'll add anchor text links from the internal pages to the home page. I might try writing articles with keyword-rich anchor text links to help boost the rankings more. There are many acceptable practices I can implement for this page (or any page) that will allow me to observe the shifts in ranking. As the old saying goes, "Don't put all your eggs in one basket." A diversified approach to SEO copywriting that includes tags, copy and links is always a wise start down the road to top 10 rankings.

10 step web design and development contract agreement

This is not written by a professional lawyer or anyone close to one. It is written by a typically business owner of a successful web development company who has no law degree or the budget to hire a lawyer to write a web development contract. However, they are in need of a contract agreement that will assure a project will be well outlined for both the client and the developer as to what the expectations are of the entire project.


I must write a disclaimer that this proven web development agreement is purely based on experience and knowledge of the web design and development industry. Others may write these contracts and agreements differently. This article is written to help others who wish to know how to begin to write a 10 step web design and development agreement. So enough said, let’s get down to the 10 steps:


1. Scope of Services:


Start off with the most important aspect of the entire project. What exactly are you as the developer going to do for the client? Present a general 3-5 sentence summary of the scope of service. Will you be responsible for the design and programming? How will the website be updated? Who will be responsible for the marketing at the end of the proejct? Who will host the website when the project is done?

First, wash out your can and peel off any labels. Next, apply a coat of metal primer to your can. Let the primer dry thoroughly. Then, apply a coat of bright acrylic paint to the can.


Once your can is painted, you can decorate it. I like to apply crackle medium and then add a top coat of color. This effect is beautiful if you paint a deep blue undercoat and a rich red overcoat on your can.


You may want to rubberstamp bugs or garden tools onto the can instead. To do this, use stamps that are flexible so that you can stamp onto the curved surface of the can. You can apply a light coat of acrylic paint to the stamp and then press the stamp onto the can, carefully rolling the stamp so that the whole image is stamped onto the can. If you mess up, don't worry. You can wipe the stamped image off the can and start over.


Another great decorative technique for decorating cans is decoupage. Use empty seed packets with pretty artwork or cut pictures from magazines and decoupage them to the can in an attractive pattern.


Once your can is decorated, apply a coat of sealer to the finished product. If you will use the can outside, you may want to let this coat dry and apply a second coat of sealer.


Now, you are ready to prepare your can for planting. Turn the can upside down. Use a 3 inch nail and a hammer to poke drainage holes in the bottom of the can. Turn your can over and fill it to just an inch below the rim with good potting soil.

American Express Travel offers a cancel for any reason insurance that even covers your airline tickets. These Internet booking engines are now beginning to offer "insurance," but it rarely covers cancellations in full. So buyer beware! The Internet is a beautiful thing, but for travel arrangements, it is not always as good as it seems. Travel agents are not focused on quantity, but quality. In this day in age, travel agencies stay afloat with their repeat clients, who swear by them. So travel safe, not sorry, and call a travel agent to hear more benefits that each agency offers their clients.


Traveling light - never check luggage

One of the best illustrations I’ve seen for not checking bags happened at DFW Airport a short time back. It was during a heavy thunderstorm, and they had shut down ramp operations due to the lightning.


I was standing at a window overlooking the ramp area wondering when, if ever, I’d actually get out of Dallas. The downpour was torrential, all personal were inside, and all support equipment and vehicles had been left standing where they were when the ramp was closed.


This included baggage trains, of which I could see three, comprised of several carts each, all uncovered, and all full of bags and packages getting completely soaking wet. There were also bags sitting on the ground, stopped on the loading ramp to cargo holds, and one cart was chock full of cardboard packages, all getting doused.


It ended up raining hard for about 20 minutes, then lighter for about the same amount of time. It doesn’t take much to imagine the condition of those bags contents, not to mention the packages once the cardboard got saturated and turned to mush.


What I found interesting was that all the baggage carts had covers, but those covers were all rolled up or thrown back. So what’s the deal. I mean it’s a rainy day, so any thinking person should know the covers should be in place and only thrown back on the cart being worked. Then it would’ve taken all of 2 seconds to throw the cover back over the bags before scurrying inside.


This is just one example, but there are countless illustrations of uncaring baggage handlers doing a pitiful job. I’ve watched bags falling off carts, thrown in or bounced off carts, kicked, flung, piled up and falling off loading ramps, dropped in puddles, run over, the list just goes on and on.


If that doesn’t show the sense in not checking luggage by only using carry-on bags, then how about theft. You may not realize it, but a lot of stuff goes missing from checked bags. Between the ticket counter and the carousel, are many opportunities for pilferage.


I’ve lost count of the number people I’ve encountered who’ve had items stolen out of their bags. It should go without saying that valuables should never be checked, but often the items taken aren’t even all that valuable. Shoes and other pieces of clothing mysteriously disappear as well.


With the new TSA rules especially, you shouldn’t even bother locking bags anymore, as they will just cut the locks. Who among those checking a bag hasn’t found the little note inside saying this bag was searched? Happens routinely.


Also, the TSA approved locks aren’t failsafe either. They say that by using them, the security folks can open them with master keys, thus saving the lock, but I found it interesting reading about how one guy using such a lock found it cut and placed inside his case with the aforementioned note. The humorous part was that he was a senior executive with one of those lock manufacturing companies.


Then there are the problems with lost luggage. Statistically inevitable, if you travel enough, it will happen to you. The best outcome is that it didn’t get on the plane, or got on the wrong plane, and will catch up to you in 24 to 48 hours.


The worse outcome is it never shows. In between are various numbers of days until it arrives. Regardless, you will stand in a line to fill out your claim, wasting yet more time with long lines and unsympathetic, uncaring airline staff. Think about it – no one talks to these people except irate passengers, so they’re going to have an attitude. Sort of like anyone working a complaint line, which is probably why people take those jobs as a last resort.


What happens to all that lost, unclaimed baggage? It goes to auction. Great huh? So much for all that stuff you just had to have along.


At the end of the day, the potential hassles just don’t justify the risk of checking luggage. Why not save yourself a lot of grief by using only a single carry-on bag and travel light?

The foot-bed is second to none, and the sandal straps are made of high quality softened leather so that the sandals are comfortable from the first day you walk in them. I've had pairs of Birkenstock sandals last as long as 7 years, no other cork-soled leather sandal I've ever owned has even come close.

The gmc collectible motor home

In the 1970's, General Motors entered the RV market. Drawing on the exuberance of the times, the company set out to create the ultimate American Motor home.


Their aim was to produce a top-of the-line vehicle with cutting-edge design and construction, not just another competitor in the already crowded vacation vehicle market.


The common design in this era was a boxy, ungainly and top-heavy unit on a truck chassis. The GMC vehicle was intended to be a completely new design in every way.


Design work began in 1970, with the market introduction planned for 1973. "Doesn't look like a box or ride like a truck" was the GMC ad slogan.


The new vehicle would be unusual for this era in several ways. First of all, it was to have a front wheel drive, a rare concept in cars of that day and unheard-of in mobile homes.


The drive train and suspension were taken from the design of the Oldsmobile Toronado. The 265 horsepower 455 cubic inch Oldsmobile engine was attached to a Turbohydramatic 425 transmission with torsion bar suspension.


The rear suspension was a product of GM's bus design, using dual swing arms, one leading and one trailing, with a single air spring on each side.


Instead of a auto body steel, the body was to be made of lightweight aluminum and molded fiberglass-reinforced plastic such as was used in the Chevrolet Corvette.


The front wheel drive and independent swing arm rear suspension brought great improvement to the standard motor home design.


The lack of drive shafts and axles underneath the coach allowed a very low floor height, leading in turn to a low overall vehicle height and lower center of gravity.


Aside from easier entry and exit, this reduced rollover risk and wind resistance and made the vehicle much safer and easier to operate for buyers accustomed only to car driving.


A six-wheel braking system, with disc brakes on the front and drum brakes on all four rear wheels, further enhanced drivability.


Previous motor home design focused mainly on the use of the vehicle as a temporary home once it had reached its destination, an extended stay in a mobile home park or a camping spot.


Ease of getting to the destination was of secondary concern, and cumbersome handling on the road was taken for granted. GMC made a special point of targeting this feature for improvement by adding visibility from the driver's seat with a panoramic expanse of glass.


The motor home was featured in 23 foot and 26 foot lengths, fairly small even for this era.


Nowadays, much larger models are common. The motor home's interior design was compact, with no permanent sleeping areas in the original design. All beds were converted from seating areas when required.


Hot water was provided by water heaters using engine coolant loops, which produced water so hot it could actually present a scalding hazard since coolant temperatures usually exceed 200 degrees Fahrenheit.


The refrigerator was powered by a standard automotive battery, adequate only for overnight use before recharging.


The prototype was first displayed in May 1972 at the Transpro '72 trade show in Washington, D. C. Production started in 1973 with two models, Model 230 and Model 260, 23 and 26 feet long respectively.


They were sold with a finished interior for the public as well as unfinished to other RV manufacturers such as Avion and Coachman, who then provided their own interiors before reselling to consumers.


30 different floor plans were available, and models were priced from $35,000 to $40,000.


The GMC vehicle changed slightly over time, the most notable alteration coming in 1977 when the 455 cubic inch engine was replaced by a 403 cubic inch model in response to the energy crisis.


This decade caused hardship for all RV manufacturers as the increased price of fuel pushed large gas guzzling vehicles out of the market.


The GMC motor home had never sold at high volumes, and the company decided that the RV production facilities could be more profitably used to make light trucks. After the manufacture of 12,921 vehicles, production of motor homes was discontinued after the 1978 model year.


Almost immediately after production ceased, GMC motor homes became collectors' items, with owners' associations being established to provide parts and service for these vehicles.


Small manufacturers and garages developed a cottage industry servicing them. In 1992, as General Motors prepared to scrap all remaining tools and parts, Cinnabar Engineering purchased all the motor home manufacturing supplies and negotiated a deal to continue to provide parts for the discontinued vehicles.


In 1992, a monthly magazine called GMC Motor home Marketplace was introduced, and in 1994 Cinnabar started publishing a quarterly newsletter called GMC Motor home News.


The vehicle's futuristic design has even found a place in pop culture: Mattel Toys created die-cast versions of the GMC motor home for its Hot Wheels line.


More than 50 different GMC Hot Wheels are available, and in 1977, Mattel released three toy GMC versions in a Barbie Doll Star Traveler promotion.


In an amazing example of customer loyalty and product durability, more than 8,000 units are still registered by owners.


An internet search of "GMC Motor home" produces 771,000 results, as sites advertise motor home parts, engines and upgrades as well as classic car rallies for owners.


Used GMC motor homes sell for $10,000 to $15,000 depending on the condition of the vehicle.

Acura the improved luxury lineup

Honda originally launched their Acura sport and luxury division during 1986, and the company has continually improved their product line ever since. The days of Acura's driving and performing like their similar Honda counterparts are long gone.
