Finding the best espresso machine for you

You need to know what features are most important on a machine when looking for which espresso machines would best suit your needs. There are many espresso machines out there, with many manufacturers producing various makes and models. Upscale coffee houses use their wealth of knowledge and what their associates in the business say to discover which espresso machines are the best. Even they though, need some help when new makes and models are introduced to the market. What should a consumer do? Continue reading to find out.

One feature to look for in an espresso machine is the built-in grinder. These machines tend to have a special grind dial as well to help you the level of coarseness your grind produces. If you don't have a built-in grinder, then you will need to calibrate your separate bean grinder machine to correspond with your new espresso machine. Many of these grinder machines come preset to a certain grind, such as for a French press or automatic drip brewer, which may be too coarse. It may take several tries, and several shots of espresso before you achieve the grind that's perfect for your machine. Espresso experts suggest that two ounces of espresso be pulled between 17 and 23 seconds from a double basket.

If you're having trouble doing this grind test, bear in mind that good machines should be able to tolerate a variation in the coarseness of grinds. You can tell which espresso machines are the highest quality because they won't get clogged by grinds that are slightly too fine or too coarse. The finest machines have a safety valve that gives the machines a higher tolerance to force water through grinds that require more pressure, such as finer grinds. The espresso that is produced may not taste as good if the grind is not exact. Industry research has shown that there is an ideal pressure for extraction. Higher pressures from too-fine grinds can result in the shot taking too long to pull, which will result in espresso that is too strong and bitter. Grinding the beans too coarse will result in shots that finished too quickly, with a weak flavor and color.

Another thing that can indicate which espresso machines are highest quality is how loud the machine is. Premium brands should be relatively quiet. The best make of espresso machine is at the decibels of a whisper--in other words, a very low decibel. A good rule of thumb is that you should be able to carry out a normal volume of conversation while your machine pulls a shot. That way, you can tell all your friends how fantastic your machine is before they taste it for themselves.

Make your own podcast finding your topic

If you've listened to a few podcasts you may have been struck with the idea, "Hey, I'll bet I could do that!" Doing your own podcast isn't hard, but where some people get stuck is right at the very beginning...

"What should my podcast be about?"

There are two ways people usually go about choosing a topic. The first way is to choose something you really love -- something you're very passionate about. This can make a podcast that's really enjoyable to create as well as to listen to. The problem comes in when you decide that it might be a great idea to make some money with your podcast (whether to help pay for hosting or to use for pizza) and you find out the topic you've chosen is too small to really make any money.

The other way to choose a topic is to go to the other end of the spectrum, and to do some research on niches that make a lot of money. Some of the obvious topics are health, golf, mortgages, etc. There's money to be made in those niches. But there's a problem with deciding to do a podcast on mortgages if you're just in it for the money...

...after a few episodes you're likely to experience what's known in the industry as "podfade" -- that's when a podcast just... kind... of... goes... away.

Because even if the niche has the potential to make a lot of money, if it's not something you're interested in, it'll become a drag to create another episode.

So the best way to choose a topic is to go somewhere in the middle. Find a topic you're interested in, but which also has the potential to make some money. (Note: In just about any topic there's usually ways to monetize a podcast, but here I'm talking about the easiest and most sure route).

Let's say you really love collecting root beer bottle caps -- it's your passionate hobby. Starting a podcast with that theme is probably not the best idea -- at least, not if you want a good chance at monetizing your podcast in the future.

Instead, move more toward the middle of the road and maybe do a podcast for collectors of all kinds. Even though you collect root beer bottle caps and someone else collects agates, you both have a common passion -- collecting. You can now do a podcast that will appeal to collectors of all types -- you've broadened your market tremendously.

And on the other end of the scale, if you're starting your own podcast to monetize it right off the bat, choose a topic with money-making potential, but that is also of interest to you. For example, if you like to work around the house you could do a podcast about home improvement. And people who repair their homes are sometimes interested in home mortgages, so there's a way you can tie that big "money-maker" niche into a niche about which you're really passionate.

There's nothing wrong with starting a podcast that you never monetize -- a lot of people get into podcasting for the sheer fun of it and to connect with others who have similar interests. But if you are going to want to monetize your podcast, the time to think about that is at the very beginning, when you're just getting started.

Looking for nissan parts

Does your Nissan car need repairs? Well wouldn’t you consider buying Nissan parts for your repairs? If you said “yes”, that’s because Nissan has always given us good quality parts in any of their vehicles. So naturally, we’d want to give our cars quality parts if they needed to be repaired.

All the Nissan parts that are in the vehicle play a big part in the cars appearance and the way it operates. That’s why if you are going to repair the vehicle you should use authentic Nissan parts. So you can keep the quality and performance of your car.

Without using quality Nissan parts, the performance of Nissan cars would not be the same. If you own a Nissan car that needs repair you should take it somewhere that offers Nissan parts. You can go to a Nissan dealer, but their might not always be one in you’re area, so you can go to a garage or body shop for repairs. If they don’t have the specific parts you need they can order it for you.

If you need you can always ask the price of the parts and labour before you have the repairs done. You can even check out estimates at many other garages to compare pricing. That way you can get the best price around.

Many Nissan parts carry a warranty, so be sure to keep the warranty in a safe place. Also the garage you go to can offer warranties as well. Be sure to ask if they offer any warranties.

Nissan cars are very popular, they have a wide range of car types. From family to sports cars, doesn’t matter the type Nissan offers the same quality cars. So be sure to take of them. You’d want your cars to last you many years to come.

One look at excellent colleges

This fall, as numerous college rankings hit the bookstores, I was curious to find an answer to the question: “What is an ‘excellent school’?” after a parent, prospective student or college recruiter sifted through all of this material.

There has been debate among admissions officers and college presidents over the value of ranking one school over another based on statistics, and those debates are valid—to a point. The rankings mean little to the best of the best; Harvard, for example, will not lose applicants for being the #2 school. They mean little to quality schools that charge little or no tuition, such as the military service academies, flagship state universities and specialty institutions like Cooper Union and Webb Institute. These schools will always fill their classes with excellent students, regardless of their ranking.

Rankings could however, mean something to families that have to make a choice between similar regional or national schools that appear below the best of the best, for instance a top regional university versus an excellent national university that’s listed in the top 100. They might also help applicants make a choice between the flagship state university in their home state and similar schools in other states that charge low out-of-state tuition and room and board rates. Being a Rutgers graduate from New Jersey, I’m especially sensitive to this; the University of Delaware and West Virginia University have been popular destinations for Garden State residents for decades.

Rankings appear to mean a lot to the presidents of some schools; high rankings can convince trustees to increase their investments in facilities and scholarships to build-up the school’s reputation. A boost from 75th to 50th means more to an up-and-coming national university than it does for a school that has a long-cemented international reputation. These ambitions are not necessarily bad; a nation can never have enough quality schools.

I did my own “kitchen table exercise” with the most recent U. S. News college guide after sifting through the published rankings. I set my own standard of excellence, based on the reported graduation and student retention rates. My thought was that the best schools are the ones that do the best to attract, retain and graduate their entering classes.

Graduation and retention rates are not perfect, but they’re the results by which admissions and student services are best measured. An excellent school has rigorous academics, but does all it can to help their students succeed; it serves no one to make college an intense “boot camp” experience to whittle a class down to an elite few. High retention and graduation rates are more likely to help attract alumni support and interest from graduate schools and employers than poor ones.

I set my bar high: an 85 percent freshman retention rate and a 65 percent six-year graduation rate. I dislike the idea of using a six-year graduation rate, but there are legitimate reasons: leaves of absence, military or missionary service, cooperative educational opportunities (combine school and work) and interest in multiple degree programs being examples.

In my kitchen table exercise, I found that 265 four-year schools met my standard. Among the nation’s 262 Large Research Universities—these are the large public and private universities--104 schools met or exceeded the 85-65 standard, including all of the top 72 in the rankings. Among 266 National Liberal Arts Colleges, 105 met or exceeded both numbers. There were also 37 regional universities and 8 baccalaureate colleges that met or bested both marks, as well as 11 specialty (fine arts, performing arts, engineering and business) schools.

By my standard, the list of “excellent” schools is larger than some parents might think. It does include the most selective public and private institutions, but also 84 schools that admitted more than 65% of their applicant pool for this year’s entering class. But there is another side to this analysis: the verbal and math SATs. The higher the school ranked in U. S. News, the higher the range of the scores. A combined 1,050 to 1,100 on the verbal and math SATs put most applicants near the bottom quarter of the pool in most of my excellent schools. Excellent grades might offset the test scores at all except the best of the best, but it’s best to prepare for the tests.

What could I conclude from this?

The best of the best schools deserve the accolades they receive, but there are other schools equally deserving of the same attention. Ask me to name names. Some might surprise you.

Are these the only numbers a family should consider?

They’re a start. If financial concerns are paramount, then ask about the average tuition increases and student loan indebtedness for the recent graduating classes. Also ask about the school’s bond rating; it reflects the school’s ability to earn income and cover its costs, while keeping tuition increases as low as possible. Both of these measures are important, because scholarships and grants do not always increase as tuition increases; you might have to make up the difference.

There are plenty of choices among excellent schools, but only you and your financial advisors can determine your ability to pay for college. It might surprise you to find out which school is your best value.

Don t gamble on your gaming supplies

Gaming, poker and roulette have a very unique history in American society. When most of think about gaming and history we might conjure up ideas of the Old West, Cowboys and dingy bars. Like everything else in history gaming has progressed in terms of supplies, customization and improved products. It doesn’t matter if you are having a few friends over for a friendly game of poker or you are a gaming industry because there are new products available for you.

Let us say that you desire to set up a nice little poker table in your finished basement or that you are attempting to revamp a casino. Even though the choices of products can be endless you may find services to be disjointed, having little ability to customize and multiple places to purchase all of your supplies. What if you could buy poker chips, pokers tables, poker table tops, custom chips, dining top tables, different color felts, high quality poker furniture, and just about anything else related to the poker game at a single place? You would be able to save time purchasing from this single source and money by purchasing all of your products from a single source.

Dealing a poker game is more then simply shoving some cards across the table at your guests it is about style, image and quality. If you don’t have these essential elements of a good game few people will be able to engage themselves deeply in the entertainment experiences. For example, how long will someone play a game of poker if his or her back hurts from a poor chair or they have no place to put their feet? Having the proper equipment will affect how long people stay, how much money they spend, whether they enjoyed the game and whether or not they will come back.

There are many tricks when it comes to gambling that people need to be aware of. Have you ever visited a McDonald's and found the chairs became very uncomfortable after about 20 minutes. This is done so that people will eat quickly and get out. The more people revolve through the door the more the company earns in terms of profits.

The same concept can be applied to table games equipment. If the table is measured correctly, the chairs are uncomfortable, the cards are hard to read and the dearl doesn't know what he or she is doing there is a good chance that people will leave early. Every time someone leaves early means that extra revenue is lost.

Assuming that casinos and other gaming places run on 15 minute intervals you will want to keep people sitting at the poker tables just 15 minutes longer. A few hundred or thousand people that sit 15 minutes longer the millions of extra dollars the casino earns. It is all in the furniture, the design of the table and the overall comfortability. That extra 15 minutes could mean the difference between profitability and closure. Make sure you got the right supplies.

Deck design must fit the outdoor surroundings

The key to designing a successful outdoor living space is to create an area that reflects the architectural character of the home as well as the personality of the homeowners who inhabit the space. Deck designs that plan for the elements last 20+ years. Decks without a proper plan age quickly.

The most important consideration in deck designs is how you will use it, how large a group will you need space for? Will you need adequate lighting to entertain at night? A good deck plan makes it easy to build a deck yourself, or hire a professional to build the deck you want. Choose materials that complement your backyard setting.

The deck can be considered a floor structure, with joists to support the flooring material and posts and beams to hold the unit up off the ground, slightly elevated or higher. Deck designs are popular home improvements that not only add to the value of your home, but also provide a focal point for enjoying the outdoors.

A deck can be freestanding or attached to a house and can feature a roof, benches, matching flowerpots and ornate railings.

Once you have a rough idea of what you want, draw two sketches-one of your lot Take the sketch to your local home center or lumberyard and ask a salesperson to estimate and price the materials you'll need. You can have a spectacular deck to meet all your needs and then some.

Part 4 - learning parrot fashion or learning spanish grammar

In my last article I started to write about some of the first steps I took when I decided to learn the Spanish language. In this article I want to talk about two different approaches to learning a new language that you may want to think about before you dive head long into a text book or start trying to memorise hundreds of Spanish words.

The way that people best absorb and retain information differs from person to person but generally speaking our brains work better if the information we are trying to absorb is presented to us in a way that is informative and interesting. If the human brain attempts to learn by being continuously presented with factual information it will very quickly suffer from Neural System Fatigue; that is, our ability to remain interested in what we are trying to learn will quickly be lost.

New information is best absorbed by the human brain if it triggers our human emotions. Learning facts anecdotally is one method of achieving this. The key is to provide the brain with stimuli. It is far more likely that the brain will absorb new Spanish words for example if those words can be related to something else or if they forms part of a small list of other similar words. Trying to learn hundreds of unconnected words at once is likely to be less effective. I will talk more about learning vocabulary in later articles.

So what stimulus works best? How does the human brain react to different types of stimuli? Well, this of course is what differs from person to person. We are all different. Something that interests me might be the most boring thing in the world to somebody else!

Often you will see teachers and text books trying to teach Spanish by following two different general approaches. The first approach is what I like to call, teaching "parrot fashion". This involves the student processing and remembering new Spanish words and phrases and then simply repeating them our loud. Certain words and phrases can be associated with different topics. The student can simply learn a particular word and remember that that word is only used in particular situations without necessarily understanding why.

The second approach to learning is more methodical. It requires the student to learn a new word or phrase and then to understand why that word or phrase is being used in the way that it is. What we are really saying here is that the grammar of a language is important. We can learn Spanish by trying to understand some fundamental points about the structure of the language.

So which method works best? The truth is that you are unlikely to be able to learn Spanish effectively without having some understanding of Spanish grammar. In reality it will probably take you far longer to learn Spanish if you simply rely on trying to remember when certain words and phrases are used in speech.

A good example of how useful learning Spanish grammar can be is when trying to learn different verb tenses. The way verbs are formed in Spanish is very different to the way they are formed in English. I will talk more about this in later articles. The great thing is that if we learn certain rules about how one particular verb should be formed in one particular tense in Spanish then quite often we can apply this rule to hundreds of other verbs too.

By learning Spanish grammar we can form words and sentences without necessarily having to learn hundreds of words individually. Following grammatical guidelines and applying rules will ultimately allow us to learn new words more quickly.

The problem is that learning Spanish grammar for many is quite boring! It essentially requires that the human brain absorbs technical and factual information. Without varied stimuli learning Spanish grammar might take a very long time.

To avoid losing concentration and becoming board it is probably best to mix both approaches to learning Spanish. This is especially true at the early stages of the learning process. By learning Spanish words and phrases "parrot fashion" at least the student feels immediate satisfaction by being able to communicate. Learning the basics using this method is probably best. It doesn’t take much for anyone to learn how to say hello and introduce themselves!

I mentioned in my last article that when first learning Spanish you shouldn’t get too bogged down with how different words and phrases are formed. The point is that you want to feel enthused about learning. However, if you are serious about learning Spanish then at some point you will need to learn Spanish grammar. Don’t rush it and make sure you provide your brain with the stimuli that it needs. In the next article I intend to talk more about different types of stimuli and how I managed to keep myself enthused when I first started to learn Spanish.
